Formula

Total days = end date − start date, counted using calendar-accurate UTC dates so leap years and different month lengths are handled automatically.

Inclusive vs exclusive

By default the end date itself isn’t counted. Turn on “Include end date” for things like rental periods or trip lengths, where the last day still counts.

Business days

Toggle “Business days only” to skip weekends — useful for shipping estimates, project timelines, and anything measured in working days rather than calendar days.

Results are calculated using standard Gregorian calendar rules and do not account for public holidays or time-zone shifts unless you factor them in yourself.

About

What a date calculator actually does

Keeping track of dates by hand is easy to get wrong once leap years, month lengths, or weekends get involved. A date calculator handles that math instantly and consistently.

📅

What is it?

A date calculator is a digital tool that works out the gap between two dates in days, weeks, months, or years, instead of counting manually on a calendar. It’s built for planning schedules, working out someone’s age, setting deadlines, and generally keeping tasks on track.

More capable versions go further — adding or subtracting days from a fixed date, counting only working days, or factoring in holidays for business scheduling.

⚙️

How it works

  • Enter the start date — the point you want to count from.
  • Enter the end date — the point you want to compare against.
  • Get an instant result — the gap between them, shown in days and broken down into weeks, months, and years.

More advanced tools also let you include or exclude weekends and holidays, which matters a lot for business and project planning.

Why use one instead of counting by hand

  1. Saves time. Manually counting days between two dates is slow and easy to get wrong — the calculator gives an instant answer.
  2. Accurate results. Leap years and uneven month lengths are handled automatically, however long the date range.
  3. Easier planning. Vacations, projects, and appointments become easier to schedule with realistic timelines.
  4. Wide range of uses. Businesses, schools, and other institutions rely on the same date math for scheduling, payroll, and project tracking.
  5. Works anywhere. Being web-based, it runs on a computer, tablet, or phone with nothing to install.

FAQs

Common questions

Does the calculator account for leap years?+
Yes. Every calculation runs off real calendar dates, so the extra day in February during a leap year is picked up automatically — you don’t need to adjust anything yourself.
What’s the difference between total days and the Y/M/D breakdown?+
Total days is a straight count between the two dates. The years / months / days breakdown is calendar-based instead — since months don’t all have the same length, it’s built from the actual calendar rather than by dividing the total day count.
Should the end date be counted or not?+
By default the end date isn’t counted (exclusive), which is the standard way to measure a gap between two points in time. Turning on “Include end date” adds one extra day — useful for things like a rental period or a trip, where the last day should still count.
What happens if I enter the end date before the start date?+
The calculator will still return a result and simply flag the direction as “backward,” so you can see at a glance that the end date falls before the start date rather than getting a confusing error.
Can I use it to count only business days?+
Yes — turning on “Business days only” excludes Saturdays and Sundays from the count, which is useful for shipping windows, project deadlines, or anything measured in working days. Public holidays aren’t excluded automatically, so add those manually if they apply.
Can a date calculator be used to work out someone’s age?+
Yes. Setting the start date to a birth date and the end date to today gives the calendar-accurate years, months, and days elapsed — the same underlying math used by a dedicated age calculator.
